Vivaldi enjoyed a rock star’s lifestyle in the 18th century. He had numerous love affairs, travelled far afield, composed innovative music and enjoyed immense popularity among a broad audience. One of his greatest admirers was Johann Sebastian Bach. This Italian programme, based on three of Vivaldi’s concertos – all with diverse instrumental scoring – takes us on a journey through several centuries. We enter the early Baroque era with Merula, the most progressive composer of his time. Composed in neo-classical style, Grieg’s Holberg Suite is a compilation of dances from Vivaldi’s time. A new CD featuring Vivaldi’s three concertos, performed by the orchestra and Harriet Krijgh, will be released on the Deutsche Grammophon label in september. After the concert, you can take Vivaldi home with you.
