The Austrian Thomas Larcher is one of the most prominent figures on the contemporary composing scene. His musical idiom is strongly rooted in tradition, but is also imbued with a powerful and poignant meditative quality. He recently composed works for the San Francisco Philharmonic, Wiener Philharmoniker and the London Proms. Now the master of composition writes a cello concerto for Amsterdam Sinfonietta.

- Larcher • Commissioned work (world première)
- Haydn • Cello Concerto in C
- Dvořák • Serenade

In a review of the last performance of a Haydn cello concerto given by Amsterdam Sinfonietta together with Queyras the NRC enthused: ‘The French cello phenomenon. (…) Haydn is rarely performed in such a fresh and sparkling way.’ After the interval the strings will perform Antonin Dvořák’s irresistibly appealing Serenade. A few years ago Amsterdam Sinfonietta recorded this core repertoire piece on CD. The international press showered the interpretation with accolades, writing: ‘One of the most desiring and beguiling performances of Dvorak’s Serenade that one could imagine’ and ‘Everything here breathes musical passion, and the listener cannot but surrender to such a performance’.

The new composition by Thomas Larcher is commissioned by Amsterdam Sinfonietta en Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, with support of AMMODO, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Munich Chamber Orchestra and Hong Kong Sinfonietta.
