Jean-Guihen Queyras

with Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C

The French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras appears with Amsterdam Sinfonietta once again. The hallmarks of Queyras’s performing style are virtuosity, refinement and his irresistible delight in playing the cello. Tonight he performs Haydn’s cello concerto in C.

In a review of the last performance of a Haydn cello concerto given by Amsterdam Sinfonietta together with Queyras the NRC enthused: ‘The French cello phenomenon. (…) Haydn is rarely performed in such a fresh and sparkling way’. Wolf’s Italian Serenade is no less charming and full of humour. The light-hearted work is inspired by an old Italian melody.

- Dvořák • Serenade
- Berg • Sonata opus 1 for string orchestra
- Haydn • Cello Concerto in C

Before the interval the strings will perform Antonin Dvořák’s irresistibly appealing Serenade. A few years ago Amsterdam Sinfonietta recorded this core repertoire piece on CD. The international press showered the interpretation with accolades, writing: ‘One of the most desiring and beguiling performances of Dvorak’s Serenade that one could imagine’ and ‘Everything here breathes musical passion, and the listener cannot but surrender to such a performance.’
