Beethoven Sonata no. 9 for violin and string orchestra ‘Kreutzer’ (arr. R. Tognetti)
Janáček String Quartet no. 1 ‘Kreutzer’ (version for string orchestra)

Leo Tolstoy’s novella Kreutzer Sonata tells the story of a man consumed by jealousy who murdered his wife. He suspected she was having an affair with the violinist with whom she was playing Beethoven’s ninth sonata for violin and piano – nicknamed the ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata. Beethoven dedicated the fiendishly difficult sonata to his friend, the French violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer, who never actually played the work himself. The crime of passion intrigued Leoš Janáček. In his first string quartet, entitled ‘Kreutzer Sonata’, he gave musical expression to the story, scene by scene and in a remarkably original manner. Amsterdam Sinfonietta collaborates with Orkater to create the music theatre performance Kreutzer vs Kreutzer, in which not Tolstoy’s main character but the wife and violinist have their say. What exactly happened and was it in fact a case of adultery?
