Thomas Hampson is one of the leading baritones in the United States and enjoys international renown as an interpreter of the classical art song. In the past he has joined Amsterdam Sinfonietta on tour in Europe, including appearances in the major concert halls of Dublin, Madrid, Vienna and Lisbon. We also recently teamed up to create the well-received ‘Tides of Life’ CD. Now we join forces again, for a Romantic and late-Romantic programme with love as a main theme, featuring songs by Schubert and new arrangements of songs by Richard Strauss. Hanns Eisler completed his Ernste Gesänge just a few weeks before his sudden death. In this work he departed from his militant and activistic musical style – composing a piece for the ‘romantic’ string orchestra was already an unprecedented step for him. Titles such as ‘Traurigkeit’ and ‘Verzweiflung’ recall Wagner’s compelling Prelude from Tristan und Isolde.
