Amsterdam Sinfonietta and ISH Dance Collective will challenge each other in The Waste Land. Exhilarating string music and acrobatic dance forms are featured in this program about decay and rebirth.
Amsterdam Sinfonietta joins forces with ISH Dance Collective for The Waste Land, a unique production based on T.S. Eliot’s hundred-year-old, eponymous poem and inspired by the music of the Iranian composer Farokzhad Layegh.
Eliot’s poem depicts a world that displays many similarities with today’s world. The challenges multiply: war, poverty, loneliness, the climate crisis. However, hope endures and the human will is unquenchable. In The Waste Land, compelling music for strings and acrobatic dance take the audience on a sensory journey towards the future, from darkness to light. In a performance portraying the eternal cycle of decline and regeneration, the musicians and dancers challenge each other to extend their own boundaries, using diverse musical styles and dance forms.
