ECHO tour
In March 2011 the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO) invited Amsterdam Sinfonietta to take its Liebestod programme on tour, performing at six top European venues. This tour counts as one of the high points in the orchestra’s history. The innovative programme was an ingenious combination of film, drama and contemporary music. Amsterdam Sinfonietta collaborated with the stage director Pierre Audi, actor Jeroen Willems, composer Michel van der Aa and star cellist Sol Gabetta. Up-close was specially composed by Michel van der Aa for the tour, later earning him the Grawemeyer Award. It can best be described as a cello concerto expanded into a video-opera. The programme also featured the complete Lyrische Suite by Alban Berg. The love letters that inspired this work were read aloud by the actor Jeroen Willems, in a staging by Pierre Audi.
“Expect the unexpected from Amsterdam Sinfonietta. The all-string outfit doesn’t just play music. It also reconfigures examples of the art form”

Thomas Hampson tour
In 2014 Amsterdam Sinfonietta and the American baritone Thomas Hampson undertook a major European tour, giving twelve concerts in six different countries in the space of two weeks. This followed their earlier successful collaborations. New arrangements of Brahms, Barber, Wolf and Schubert for baritone and string orchestra were given their world premières. Barber’s Dover Beach was performed for the first time in string orchestra version, with special permission granted by the publisher’s heirs. The Portuguese daily Publico summed up the concert as a perfect symbiosis between the singer and orchestra.
South America tour with NKK
In 2017 Amsterdam Sinfonietta made its debut appearance in South America, together with the Nederlands Kamerkoor. They gave concerts at four major concert halls in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Chili. The programme included Fauré’s Requiem, performed for the first time without conductor. The ensembles also presented works by Nystedt, Pärt, Bach and Shostakovich, with a strikingly dramaturgical focus. Bach’s Chaconne was heard in a unique performance involving solo violinist and singers.
